WEEK 9 REFLECTIONS FROM THE #NEXTERNSHIP INTERNS

Every week we will post a quick roundup of lessons learned during this past week's work by each of our #Nexternship interns. We hope that even though YOU are not able to be Jenny's intern, you can learn through our fearless team! Every week, they answer three of the same questions. SOAK IN THE GOODNESS. Read more about them here.

  1. What made you feel uncomfortable this week and why? What can you do differently next time, if anything?
I was hit with many important decisions this week. At first I felt overwhelmed with all the news I received. I didn't know how to process it and I resorted to making a decision quickly. I didn't act on it, however. This proved to be a good thing. I talked about my situation with my friends and family who not only validated my decision, but reassured me with additional reasoning. Next time I'm overwhelmed with needing to make big decisions, I will definitely be reaching out to my close network to avoid unnecessary stress.

  2. I didn’t know that I didn’t know…
You have to do what you have to do. Thinking about what others will think or feel will definitely impede on your personal path. Make decisions that will be best for you. Follow your heart and your head.

  3. What else did you learn this week that will be helpful to other people who are interested in pursuing the entertainment industry?
I looked at a few resumes for friends this past week and saw many grammar mistakes. You may have read through your resumes tens of times, but another close look won't hurt. Have a friend to review it as well to serve as a fresh pair of eyes.

  1. What made you feel uncomfortable this week and why? What can you do differently next time, if anything?

My second internship came to an end on Friday and it's left me feeling uncertain of the future. I'm trying to stay positive and take this break as a welcomed reprise from the whirlwind that's been the past two months. I've made connections and left on a good note with those I've worked with, but I still feel as though I've left without a plan or a clear idea of how to get where I want to go. Perhaps part of the issue is I'm still trying to figure out what exactly it is that I really want. There's still so much fear in pursuing the arts and believing in myself and my abilities- even though I have my parents' blessings!

  2. I didn’t know that I didn’t know…

Sometimes people are secretly fighting for you, even if nothing comes of it. It's always good to know that there are people on your side, even if it's invisible to you.

I cannot stress this enough: it's not always a meritocracy out here. It's who you know. So, try not to take losses as a reflection of your capabilities or competence.

  1. What made you feel uncomfortable this week and why? What can you do differently next time, if anything?

I just started another internship centered around organizing communities for social justice, and after our first training yesterday, I started feeling really stressed about my role as an intern in this context. I find myself feeling uncomfortable with identifying as an activist, because I feel like I don't have the "right" to do so — I grew up quite privileged, my childhood community was comprised of a bubble of East Asians, and I sometimes feel very "fake" when I take on active roles in fighting for social justice. Of course, the thing that I have to do is clear: stop making it about myself, push through the discomfort, and continue educating myself and using resources available to me as a platform for marginalized communities.

  2. I didn’t know that I didn’t know…

Bullet journaling is actually pretty effective!

Tune in next time...I have no advice for now...
